Muslim Cleric Teaches How to Properly Beat Your Wife

I recently came across this video, a recording of Abdullah Aal Mahmud, a Bahraini Cleric, teaching the rules of wife-beating. I don’t have a whole lot to say to prepare you for this video, so enjoy:

The Quran says:

QURAN 4:34 – “Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them. Surely God is high, supreme.

There are two issues here. One is gender equality and the other is abuse.

Apparently at one time, there weren’t people to oppose wife-beating. It was the “norm” and every approved. But society progressed and realized gender equality. Does this mean that religion should change too? Should religions re-write their books to match civilization’s progressions? There are many instances in the Quran and Bible alike (i.e. slavery) where barbaric and inhumane advice is given. How does religion treat this advice? And if we should not follow it, how do religious followers know when to start and stop following the advice in their book?

Many of the objectionable outdated religious guidance suggests that we should use violence against people for various reasons. Stoning, beating, using swords, etc. are all talked about in the most popular holy books. Doesn’t human nature tell us that this is wrong? Say you’re a devout follower of Islam 200 years ago and your wife has just spoken to you in a harsh tone. When you’re beating her, does it make you feel good? I suppose it does, because the anticipation of the afterlife reward trumps any feelings of suffering you feel here on Earth. On other words, kicking the shit out of your wife (but being careful not to leave a bruise, as Abdullah Aal Mahmud teaches) might make you feel a little bad, but its worth it for the wonderful reward you’ll receive after you die.
